012 Jackie Lapin- Healing Through Speaking
Barbara Hales: We have a great treat in store for you today. I’m bringing you Jackie Lapin, who has some great strategies that you’ll be able to use in your practices and to promote yourself.
Jackie Lapin is a leader in helping transformational leaders, authors, practitioners, speakers and messengers connect with their need and their next followers around the globe. For the past 10 years, her internationally acclaimed conscious companies have been providing PR campaigns, radio media tours, and speaking engagements to support the growth and revenue of change makers. Jackie Lapin is also a bestselling author herself, having written two best sellers, The Art of Conscious Creation and How You Can Transform the World, a book lauded by such other notables as Joe Vitale and Mark Victor Hansen, which as you recall is the author of Chicken Soup for the Soul.
Jackie pioneered her career as one of the nation’s first women sports writer. So welcome, Jackie. It’s really a thrill for us to have you on the show today.
Jackie Lapin: I’m delighted to be here, Barbara, and I’m looking forward to seeing how I can serve and help your community.
Barbara Hales: Well, thank you so much. And the first question that I have for you is how does your work help people with a message of health and wellness?
Jackie Lapin: Well, so many people of health and wellness obviously need to get out and grow a client base. Obviously, you’re looking to change more lives and to bring people into the programs that you’re looking to educate and serve and help and heal. And so I work in a variety of different areas helping healthcare specialists and people in the alternative health arena reach out to attract more clients. And we do that by getting them out speaking and speaking on radio and also on virtual summits, the kinds of venues that are right for delivering a message that has to do with health. People are always hungry to hear something about how they can get well if there is anything that is not in alignment in their bodies and their emotional state. And so we serve to work with transformational leaders, healthcare leaders, to give them the tools and the means to be effectively booking themselves in a world where people are waiting for their message.
Barbara Hales: That’s great. How do you help people get booked on more stages if they want to become a professional speaker and get the message out?
Jackie Lapin: Well, I think that the goal is less to be a professional speaker more, and more to be just a connector. And so, it’s not that you necessarily are going to be getting paid on a lot of speaking stages. You’re going to be speaking on a lot of stages and you may not get paid, but you’re going to be speaking to enroll people in your programs.
There are two ways to get paid for speaking. One is actually get paid to show up. The other is actually getting paid from the audience who are actually enrolling in your programs, and you need to be effective at getting them to do that.
So, we provided a resource called speakertunity.com, and that’s S-P-E-A-K-E-R-T-U-N-I-T-Y, as in speaker and opportunity, where we give them direct contacts where they can book themselves for speaking engagements all across North America. And that includes both the US and Canada.
So, we’re really looking to provide locations, venues, opportunities, organizations that are ready, willing and interested in hearing transformational messages. And certainly health is really a big part of that. So, we provide the direct contact name for the person who is a decision maker, the telephone number and the email. And wherever we can, we do also a submission link where you can actually apply online, and we do this really inexpensively. It’s only $35 a month now. I have to figure that the people that you work with are going to be charging a lot more than $35 an hour for their time. So at $35 a month, this is a bargain because we’ve done all the research.
And on top of that we have a private Facebook group where I am putting in constantly new things that I hear about, calls for speakers, opportunities that are popping up and people are looking for presenters that are going to be right for your audiences. So that gets them access to the Facebook page as well as the twice a month tip sheets, which includes more than 60 different leads every month.
Barbara Hales: Well that’s really a great value. And I’m really glad that you pointed out the differentiation between just having the opportunity to speak in front of the masses versus going out for a paid assignment. Because a lot of the healthcare workers are really doing it because they have a tremendous compelling need to get their message out to heal people, and also as an opportunity to attract more patients and grow their practice as opposed to just going out for a one-off speaking engagement.
Jackie Lapin: That’s right.
Barbara Hales: So at this point, what I’d like to know is what kind of engagements do you get access to on SpeakerTunity?
Jackie Lapin: Well, a lot of the core are local chapters of various organizations, women’s organizations, civic organization, chambers of commerce, holistic chambers of commerce, networking meetings, entrepreneurial meetings. And I love some of these others including the Near Death Experience Group and the Institute of Noetic Sciences and many health support kinds of groups that are looking for messages that are going to improve the lives of their attendees.
We also have spiritual living centers. In every issue, there is a unity or center for spiritual living, four of them in every issue so that you can build those because they love this kind of content, healing of any stripe.
Then I have bookstores, if you have a book. We also have events, conferences, conventions, lifestyle events, monthly speaker events where a speaker is offering different kinds of speakers on their stage and opportunity to come on board. Sometimes it’s for free, sometimes there’s a fee involved and sometimes they’ll do stage swaps, which is you speak on my stage and I’ll speak on your stage, and therefore no cost is exchanged. But there are leaders out there looking for other people to join them on their stages. So, we include those as well.
And then each issue, I feature an organization and I say, “Here’s what this organization does.” It could be human resources, it could be NAVO, a women’s organization, it could be a health services organization, it could be something like the Redhead Society. Whatever it is that is looking for speakers, and we then send you to the local chapters so that you can find out exactly what the local chapters are that are pertinent to you.
And the other thing is we are also putting in associations, so we’re always looking for associations. And frankly those associations that I focus on the most are those in the healthcare region. We feel that those are most pertinent to our subscribers.
Barbara Hales: That’s really great. What if people aren’t very confident in their written request to get booked and how can they increase their success rates?
Jackie Lapin: Well, I actually have a training program and it’s called Get Booked Training, and it provides details on how to write your speaker one sheet, how to communicate with speaker bookers and then how to also write there they’re radio/TV pitch letter, their media kit and get virtual summit ready. So these give them a real skills on how to do that.
Now if they really need to improve their stage presence and their signature talk presentation, we’ve got some great resources on SpeakerTunity. Barbara Hales: That’s great. Now for those people that are listening today, can you provide some tips on how will they improve their book ability?
Jackie Lapin: Well, one of the things is as professionals, a lot of the times, we have a lot of credentials behind our names. And it’s great when you establish your credibility, but the problem is that’s not what the booker wants to hear. The booker wants to hear is what can you do for their audience, exactly what you do that will make them grow, change, learn, or get motivated to do something. And when you can, and of course heal of course, and when you can establish that in your materials, you are much more likely to get booked than if you just tell about how wonderful you are. You need that, but the headline should really be about what it is that is going to change the lives of the audience.
Barbara Hales: Where can they get more of this kind of information for free?

And that’s where I tell you all about the kinds of things that the speakers that the speaker bookers are looking for. Barbara Hales: So let’s say someone’s an author and they want to get their word out about their book, can you help them?
Jackie Lapin: I certainly can. One of the things that we do is we provide a service where we book transformational and health and wellness authors and we introduce them to 3000 personal growth radio shows. Our radio media tours are unique in that we had not only have the 3000 personal growth radio shows, we have 400 health and wellness radio shows. And so when we have a book to … and it doesn’t need to be a new book either, it can be an older book and you just want the exposure, and we’re going to hook you up with a ton of radio shows and our top two-tier programs. So, we have three different price points depending on what people are looking to spend and how much work they want to do and how much work we do. But on our top two programs, we actually guarantee 30 interviews. And that’s broadcast, internet, podcasts and satellite. And keep in mind, podcasts are hot, so we’re always looking for great new podcasts as well.
